Maria Montessori designated the term "directress" to describe the role of the adult in her child focused classroom.
"Follow the Child" was her cry to those she instructed, encouraging the adult to follow the interest of each individual child as
they explored the carefully prepared environment.
Today, the adult in a Montessori classroom may be called a teacher, a leader, a guide or an instructor....but the term
directress reminds us of our true role.

Cheryl Weatherhead began working with children more than 20 years ago. Her experiences in raising five children,
foster parenting children with special needs, working in both group and home childcare settings set her on the pathway to
becoming a certified Montessori instructor. After obtaining her Early Childhood Education certificate, she continued
her studies through Montessori Centre International, located in London, England. Cheryl received a solid start in her
career through practicum experiences and she was the first directress at Aberdeen Hills Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten. In
2008, Cheryl completed her certification in Infant and Toddler Montessori. She is a certified phonics tutor and has presented
Montessori workshops to other E.C.E. professionals. 2009 was an exciting year for Cheryl as she toured Italy, visiting
international Montessori classrooms as well as San Lorenzo, site of the first Montessori preschool opened in 1907 (and
it is still operational). Sunhill Montessori Casa is a requested practicum site for E.C.E. students from Thompson Rivers University
as well as Northern Lights University.
Now operating a small classroom in her home, Cheryl invites your child to join her in a warm and loving environment filled
with Montessori materials and activities.
